Drive Rounds enable you to take your 4x4 off road in a non-competitive environment and are an ideal introduction to off-road driving. Suitable for all vehicles of all types

Trials take place at sites all around the country and enable you to test your driving skills on a wide variety of terrains. These are the ideal events to pit your 4x4 against other vehicles

All vehicles competing must comply with the MSA Technical Regulations for off road vehicles Section (P) Competitors Safety (K) Competitors Vehicles (J) and the Technical Regulations of the All Wheel Drive Club. MSA Technical Regulations (J)5.20.6 and (taxed as private car) do not apply. Each vehicle must have a scrutineering log book. These will be available at to scrutineering. All vehicles must be presented for scrutineering in a clean condition.


9.1 Chassis

(a). Must have a protective bulkhead of non-flammable material between the engine and the driver/passenger compartment, capable of preventing the passage of fluid or flame in the case of fire. Gaps must be sealed with GRP or intumescent putty. Magnesium is prohibited for bulkheads.

(b). Must have a floor of adequate strength rigidly supported within the driver and passenger compartment. No gaps or holes should be visible.

(c). Must have a minimum permitted wheelbase of 1270mm.

9.2 Body (including aerodynamic fitments)

(a). Must be fitted with bodywork that includes a crew compartment effectively isolated from the engine, batteries, gearbox, transmission shafts, brakes road wheels operating linkages and attachments, fuel tanks, oil tanks, coolant header tanks, brake reservoirs, catch tanks and radiators. The vehicle must be fitted with doors or bodywork giving side protection to driver and passenger. (Be aware of the waistline requirement as described in Paragraph 9.3.a.)

(b). Must have a bonnet or casing of metal or solid non-flammable material covering and surrounding the main engine structure that is secured by fasteners of adequate strength and have a positive locking action. All moving parts must be covered. All bonnets and hinged panels will have a retaining stay or damper fitted, or be removed from the vehicle whilst it is being scrutineered.

(c). Must be fitted with bodywork of sufficient internal size to Paragraphs 9.2.e and 9.3.a below.

(d). Not have the space normally occupied by a passengers encroached upon in such a way that may impede extrication of the driver from that side, but may have the passenger seats removed.

(e). Must have bodywork providing a minimum transverse cockpit opening width of 810mm. This width may not be interrupted.

(f). Must be equipped on all wheels with mudguards which present no sharp edges and cover the full width of the tyre around an arc of 120 degrees. This must be achieved with a continuous surface of rigid material.within which ventilation louvres may be fitted It must extend forward ahead of the axle line and extend downward behind the wheel.The tyre must not be visible when viewed from above

(g). The fitting of mud flaps, of a flexible material not less than 5mm thick, behind each road wheel extending to a minimum of 4cm each side of the tyre tread, and a maximum of 10cm above the ground when the vehicle is stationary, is mandatory. 

(h) Must be fitted with 2 rear view wing mirrors, one drivers side, one passenger side, the passenger side mirror may be substituted for an interior rear view mirror or (off-road vehicle use only) a rear facing camera with a monitor fitted to the dash board. Not to be used for recording unless authorised (MSA rule)

9.3 Seating

(a). Must have normal adequate seats within the driver/passenger compartment. The seats must be rigidly located within the compartment and must not tilt, hinge or fold. Seats must retain the occupant within the vehicle. The rear-most part of any seat must not be more than 380mm behind the rear wheel axis. The seat cushion (i.e. the part on which the occupant sits) when uncompressed, must not be less than 150mm below the top edge of the adjacent body side or door.

(b). If the vehicle is a single seater, the time for the occupant to exit the vehicle must not exceed 5 seconds.

(c) The vehicle occupant(s) seated in their normal position,wearing normal equipment,with seat belts fastened and steering wheel in place,must be able to evacuate the cockpit in a maximum of 7 seconds   MSA Bluebook (J) 5.19.2

(d) Head restraints must be fitted to prevent the occupant’s head going backwards on impact.

9.4 Engines

(a). Must be equipped with a positive method of throttle linkage closing in the event of linkage failure by means of an additional external spring to each throttle spindle.

(b). No vehicle may draw induction air from within the driver/passenger compartment. Air intakes (for front engine vehicles) must either be forward of the front bulkhead/windscreen or be pipe through to the rear of the vehicle to draw outside air from behind the rear bulkhead. The air pipe is to be of non-flammable or flame-retardant and fuel resistant material, and must be securely located. (The opposite will apply for rear engine vehicles.)

(c). Engine type and size is determined by the class structure.

(d). Engine capacity and eligibility: The capacity of turbo charged or super-charged petrol engines will be multiplied by 1.7 to determine class eligibility. This will not apply to diesel vehicles. Where class eligibility is determined by engine size. the permitted tolerance is to take into account manufacturers maximum over bore size. It is the responsibility of competitors to notify an Eligibility Scrutineer of any changes to a vehicle which effect class eligibility. Failure to do so will result in loss of all championship points, and exclusion from the championship. Vehicles will be random checked for eligibility at the events. The organisers reserve all rights as the MSA Year Book sections (D)25.l.8: (D)25.l.9: (D)25.1.l0. and require the entrant to defray any costs arising.

(e). All vehicles will be monitored for producing excessive smoke by the scrutineers, and if judged to be producing excessive smoke will be issued a warning.  If a competitor is warned, they must report back to the scrutineers prior to starting their next run, and may be asked what remedial action has been taken to rectify the problem. After 3 warnings, penalties may be awarded by the Clerk of Course.

9.5 Suspension

(a). Must be fitted with sprung suspension between the wheels and chassis unless originally manufactured otherwise.

(b). Suspension and steering movement must be controlled to avoid fouling of wheels and tyres on chassis and bodywork.

(c). Spring type is determined by the class structure.

9.6 Brakes

(a). Must be fitted with brakes that are operative and capable of stopping and holding the vehicle as required. A foot operated single brake pedal system should be used to achieve this.

(b). Independently operated rear brakes are permitted, in order to act as fiddle brakes.

(c). A separate hand brake system must be fitted to all vehicles

9.7 Steering

(a). Must have a full circumference full diameter steering wheel unless originally manufactured otherwise.

(b). Have steering movement controlled to prevent fouling of wheels and tyres on chassis and bodywork.

(c). Must have steering lock assemblies removed except for vehicles driven to events.

(d). All vehicles must have the steering wheel and steered wheels directly connected by a mechanical link.

(e). The fitment of a power assisted steering system is permitted.

(f). It is permitted to extend the steering drop arm. This is a component which is under tremendous stress whilst in use; therefore it is essential to carry out this conversion to the best engineering standards.

9.8 Wheels

(a). Have not less than four road wheels and tyres (excluding the spare).

(b). May be fitted with TUV Approved hub adapters/ wheel spacers up to a maximumof 30 mm depth

(c). Must not be fitted with duplicated driving wheels unless originally manufactured otherwise or unless permitted by supplementary regulations.

9.9 Tyres

(a). Be fitted with wheels and tyres that are compatible and also acceptable to the organiser. A particular type and size of tyre maybe prohibited under by the ASRs.

(b). The use of open centred tyres is prohibited for all classes.

(c). A spare wheel need not be carried.

(d). All tyres used on any event must comply with the minimum DOT requirements on tread depth.

(e). The use of tyre chains and studded tyres is prohibited.

(f). Tyre Rule 9a – Tyre rule 9a will apply at all competitive safari events unless there is clear stipulation to the contrary. Superseeded by 9.9 (g)

(g). Tyres must be used from Tyre List (L) Permitted Tyres List (5a)or (5b) MSA Yearbook  or authorised by scrutineer

(h) Tyre dispensation for Class 3 Volkswagen engine rail buggies only :- before any tyre not on the off-road list (L) 5(a)or(b) is used it must be authorised by the scrutineers and COC. Later type 2 wheel drive vehicles must use tyres from the list L 5 a or b

9.10 Cooling

(a). All fluid lines, tubes or internally / externally braided hydraulic pressure hoses carrying coolant through the driver/passenger compartment must be enclosed in a solid metal cover and be insulated and isolated to prevent the occupants of the vehicle from touching the hot surfaces.  Such covers must be painted red.

(b). All open radiators and expansion bottles (whether front or rear mounted) must be covered in such a manner that nobody can burn themselves on the hot open/unprotected areas of the radiator.  Special attention should be made to protect occupants from being sprayed by hot coolant from an exploding radiator or expansion tank.

9.11 Transmission

(a). Must have the transmission outside the driver/passenger compartment, beneath the floor, or secured in casings or covering of solid material.

(b). Must be equipped with an operable reverse gear.

(c). The use of limited slip, torque biasing or locking differentials is permitted.

(d). Vehicles with automatic transmissions must be fitted with a starter inhibitor switch, so that the vehicle can only be started in neutral and/or park.

(e). Vehicles fitted with sequential transmissions must have a means of showing that the transmission is in neutral.

9.12 Oil systems

(a). Any oil lines passing through the driver/passenger compartment must be protected, and if non-metallic or non-pressure, be enclosed in internally/externally braided hydraulic pressure hose.

(b). Oil coolers and filters must not be fitted in a position where, if they burst, hot oil can come into contact with the occupants.

9.13 Fuel systems

(a). Any fuel lines passing through the driver/passenger compartment must be protected, and if non-metallic or non-pressure, be enclosed in internally/externally braided hydraulic pressure hose.

(b). If fitted with a fuel filler in the boot or under closure, there must be a collector/spill tray incorporated to enable spillage to drain outside the vehicle.

(c). Use normally available pump fuel. The use of fuel additives, octane boosters, and aviation fuel is prohibited.

(d). If using LPG, conform with the Construction and Use Regulations, and also the LPG Industry Technical Association Code of Practice No 11. and have a 75mm diameter 'day-glow' orange disc affixed immediately adjacent to the competition number on both sides.

(e). Must not have fuel fillers and caps protrude beyond the bodywork, nor be situated within the driver/passenger compartment

(f). The cap must have an efficient locking mechanism to minimise the risk of release during an accident, and to ensure closure after refuelling.

(g). Air vents must be at least 250mm to the rear of the cockpit and fuel caps should be of the sealed type to prevent leakage. (see reg. i)

(h). It is strongly recommended that the fuel tank is covered with an outer metal container, which acts as a second line of defence in the event of the vehicle being inverted in an accident.

(i) Vehicles that have modified fuel systems which vent straight to atmosphere are required to have a one way valve that is manufactured for use in fuel systems fitted in the breather to stop fuel spillage.

 (j) Spill kits See MSA blue book ref (P)57.5.3.all vehicles must carry a small spill kit complying with J5.20.13

9.14 Electrical system

(a). Have any batteries in the driver/passenger compartment enclosed in a leak proof container and be securely located, so that in the event of an accident, battery acid cannot come into contact with the occupants.

(b). The battery terminals are to be protected from any metal contact which could result in a short circuit.

(c). All vehicles must be equipped with a battery, generator and a self-starter.  They must also be equipped with horn, brake lights and side lights.

(d). Headlights on vehicles will be required competing in night events.

(e). Must have the battery earth lead identified by a yellow marker.

(f). Be fitted with suppressors’ as required by the Wireless Telegraphy Regulations.

(g). Vehicles must be equipped with a circuit breaker. This must isolate the battery from all electrical circuits and must cut the engine at the same time. The switch location is optional, but must be operable from both inside by the driver and navigator with seat belts on and outside the vehicle (by a remote system if required). The circuit breaker control(s) must be identified by a red spark on a white edged, blue triangle.

(h). If a diesel engine is fitted with an electrical stop, it must be connected to the circuit breaker. If the engine is fitted with a pull cable stop system, a second cable must be fitted next to the isolator switch and marked clearly “pull to stop engine” on a plat 75mm x 50mm, on a white background with red lettering.

(i). Upgraded Four high visibility super bright red multi LED lights must be fitted as high as possible, facing and visible from the rear.Two for low visibilty (these must be on at all times whilst competing. Penalty for non-compliance is at the discretion of the Clerk of the Course) and two for stop lights one of each fitted to the RH and LH of the vehicle MINIMUM DIMENSIONS 70mm diameter or 70mm x 70mm square

9.15 Towing points and rope

(a) Recovey/Tow points :- All vehicles must be fitted front and rear with a substantial tow points comprising of a tow ball or similar bolted in place with sufficient strength to with stand a snatch recovery of a vehicle when fully bogged down.Towpoints must be painted in a contrasting colour and there location marked.It is the drivers responsibilty to get the tow rope attached to the vehicle for recovery if the tow point is visible and out of the mud the marshal may assist  

(b). All vehicles must be equipped with a nylon rope of minimum 25mm diameter. The rope must have a loop formed in each end and be at least 4.5m long. The use of chain or wire rope is prohibited. Polypropylene and hemp ropes are not recommended.  N.B. Marshals may use any equipment approved by the Clerk of Course.

9.16 Exhaust system

(a). Must have the exhaust system isolated from the driver/passenger compartment, i.e. be beneath a solid floor, or be secured in a casing of solid material.

(b). Vehicles may be fitted with a front mounted exhaust. Hot surfaces must be covered or shielded with a suitable material.

(c). Have no part of the exhaust system protruding laterally beyond a plane through the outer track of the front and rear wheels, or beyond the rear of the bodywork by more than 150mm.

(d). If all enveloping body work is fitted, have supplementary protection for exhaust systems that protrude outside the bodywork.

9.17 Silencing

(a). In all AWDC events, conform to a maximum permitted noise level as laid down in Section E of the current MSA Blue book.  The current requirement is a maximum of 100dB at 0.5m with the engine running at 2/3 maximum revs. Continuous noise testing will take place during events and competitors will be advised of excessive noise. WARNING: Temporary silencers, bypass pipes and inclusion of temporary parts to achieve silencing requirements are prohibited. Officials may refuse to carry out noise checks on vehicles utilising temporary parts in exhaust systems.

9.18 Windscreens and side screens

(a). If fitted, windscreens are to be made of either laminated glass or plastic, of a minimum thickness of 4mm. Plastic side screens, where fitted, should also have a minimum thickness of 4mm, unless fitted otherwise by the original manufacturer.

(b). The use of mesh or net hinged side screens to retain the limbs of a driver/passenger in the event of an accident is advised.

(c). The use of a sun roof with glass panel is not permitted – it has to be filled with a metal panel.

9.19 Roll over bars/cages 

Aluminium alloy roll over bars and roll cages are banned in all forms of motorsport where a roll cage is required to be fitted.  Full roll cages as per drawing 2 below are mandatory in all classes.

(a). General Considerations

(i). The basic purpose of the roll over bar is to protect the driver/passenger if the vehicle turns over or is involved in a serious accident. This purpose should not be forgotten, and in consideration of this, all roll bars and roll cages should be built to the following MSA specifications, as detailed in Paragraph 9.19.b (below) or to an approved Cross Country Vehicle and Four Wheel Drive design, which should in any case incorporate many of the provisions detailed therein.

(ii). The roll over bar/cage must be designed to withstand compression forces resulting from the weight of the vehicle coming down on the roll bar/cage structure, and to take fore and aft loads resulting from the vehicle skidding along the ground on its roll structure.

(iii). All classes must have a full roll cage with two rear facing braces and a cross brace situated either within the main rear hoop or as close as possible to it as in Drawing 1 below.

(b) Fabrication

(i). The main hoops and rear braces must connect direct to the chassis by either welding or bolting. One continuous length of tubing must be used for the hoop member with smooth continuous bends and no evidence of crimping or wall failure. .Main, Front and Lateral Rollbars. These frames ps must be made in one piece without joints.Their construction must be smooth and even, without ripples or cracks. The vertical part of the main rollbar must be as straight as possible and as close as possible to the interior contour of the bodyshell. The front leg of the front rollbar or a lateral rollbar must be straight, or if it is not possible, must follow the windscreen pillars and have only one bend unless a windscreen pillar reinforcement [1.3.5(e)] is fitted.The mounting foot must not be rearward of the foremost point of the rollbar.Where the main rollbar forms the rear legs of a lateralrollbar (see drawing K6), the connection to the lateralrollbar must be at roof level. To achieve an efficient mounting to the bodyshell, the original interior trim maybe modified around the safety cage and its mountings by cutting it away or by distortion. However, this modification does not permit the removal of thecomplete parts of upholstery or trim. Where necessary,the fusebox may be relocated to enable a rollcage to befitted.MSA Reg (K) 1.3.1 Also refer to MSA Blue Book (P) Cross Country Events page 249 Reg

(ii). All welding must be of the highest quality with full penetration. Wherever possible gas shielded arc welding should be used.

(iii). For space frame vehicles, it is important that the roll bar structure is attached in such a way as to spread the load over a wide area. The roll bar should be designed as an extension of the frame.

(iv). For monocoque vehicles, consideration should be given to using a 360 degree hoop completely around the inside of the vehicle, thus substituting for a frame.

(v). Braces should be of the same size tubing as used for the main structure, their fixing should be located as near as possible to the top of the roll bar, and in any case, at a minimum of three quarters of the height of the roll bar.

(vi). The mounting plates of the roll bar braces to the chassis must be of steel plate of minimum thickness 3mm, welded, riveted or bolted onto the chassis. The total surface area of each plate should be not less than 120sq cm of which at least one third connects with a chassis vertical member. The chassis outrigger to carry the roll bar mounting must be a minimum of 75mm x 50mm x 3mm box section.

(vii). The mounting of the main roll bar hoop(s) must be secured with at least three high tensile steel bolts and nuts (either hexagonal headed or cap head bolts of minimum diameter 8 mm/0.315 in). The attachment plate to the roll bar braces must be of the same thickness as the wall of the tube. When the roll bar rests on a box member of the latter, it must be locally reinforced by a structure constituted of either welded bolt heads or welded tubing ends.

(viii). Removable connections used in roll bar design should conform to the recommendations within the MSA blue book.

(ix). Bolts and nuts used should be of highest quality steel (preferably aircraft standards) and be of sufficient minimum diameter according to the number used. Square head bolts and nuts are prohibited.

(c). Closed Vehicles - as a general rule, the safety roll over bar structure must be made of two hoops, one behind the front seats and the other following the windscreen pillars (Refer to current MSA yearbook for full details of all drawings). The structure must be constructed in such a way as not to obstruct access to the front seats and not encroach upon the driver/passenger space. It may encroach upon the rear passenger space. The main hoops must be placed as near as possible to the roof. It is permissible to mount a longitudinal support at door level providing it forms part of the structure and is of similar tube dimensions. It may be welded in or located with approved couplings. It must not be higher than one third of the door height above the sill and angled at more than 5 degrees with the horizontal.

(d). Open  Top Vehicles - Please see regulation 9.19 (h) All Vehicles must have a roof fitted.

Competitive Safari, Point to Point and Hill Rally ROPS

56.12. There are three classifications of vehicle design which, whilst requiring the same principles of roll-cage design, may employ different mounting methods

56.13. Monocoque vehicles: These are of unitary construction employing an integral chassis structure

56.13.1. They must mount their roll-cages in accordance with K.1.3.2, may fit a diagonal as K Appendix 2 longitudinal door bars complying with K.1.3.5(b) (side, drawings 50 and 51 and must fit sections K Appendix 2 Drawing number 9).

56.13.2. A centre roof bar must be installed either diagonally or, evenly spaced in line with the exterior longitudinal bars, as shown in K Appendix 2, drawing53. If more than one centre bar is fitted, the bars must be minimum specification for optional members, are evenly spaced. Double crossed roof bars, to the strongly recommended, as shown in K Appendix 2, drawing 10

56.13.3. It is recommended that a horizontal bar be incorporated in the front hoop, located approximately in line with the base of the windscreen, which may be bolted or welded to the front hoop members and shall comply with the specifications for an optional member (57.1.).mandatory for safari + and hill rally

56.14. Vehicles with chassis: These employ a separate chassis structure from the body or superstructure.

56.14.1. They must mount their roll-cage directly to the chassis in accordance with K Appendix 2, drawing 33,

following the principles of K.1.3.2.

56.14.2. Exceptionally where the body contains a superstructure of internal steel pressings including the

floor and the roll-cage is MSA/FIA certified it is permitted to install the roll-cage in accordance with 56.13.

56.14.3. Where it is necessary to weld additional chassis outriggers on which to mount the roll-cage these must,

 be of at least 75x50mm box section steel, and not less than 3mm thick

56.14.4. Alternatively the main hoop may be constructed as in K Appendix 2, drawing 38, allowing mounting to the main chassis rails, or as in K Appendix 2, drawings 50 and 51 where a beam is welded across the chassis rails. This beam must comply with 55.14.3.

56.14.5. Where the roll-cage passes through the superstructure’s floor panels, two alternative methods may be employed a) Either oversize holes allowing uninterrupted passage of the tubes to the chassis placed so as to allow for the movement of the superstructure where this is rubber mounted to the chassis, or b) Or spreader plates complying with K.1.2.2 may be used to sandwich the floor where the cage structure is continued through the floor pan to the chassis and mounted as in K Appendix 2, drawing 33.

56.14.6. The backstays in short wheelbase vehicles may have to be mounted aft of the rear suspension mountings to the chassis in order to comply with K.1.3.2.

56.14.7. K Appendix 2, drawings 52, 53, and 57 show the installation for an external front cage to an internally mounted rear roll bar and backstays showing the method for attachment through the vehicle’s roof skin This installation may only be used where the body is rigidly mounted to the chassis


Cross Country Events (P)

56.14.8. The backstays where mounted directly to the chassis must be angled to the main roll hoop as shown in K Appendix 2, drawing 57. Existing vehicles configured with the backstays mounted in line with the main chassis members as shown in K Appendix 2, drawing 57 are permitted

56.14.9. The longitudinal bars connecting the front to rear roll bars should be straight, or where a manufacturer’s truck cab or hard top is fitted the bars may follow the contours of the roof.

56.14.10. A centre bar must be installed either diagonally or, if evenly spaced in line with the exterior longitudinal bars, as shown in K Appendix 2, drawing 53. If more than one centre bar is fitted, the bars must be evenly spaced. Double crossed roof bars, to the minimum specification for optional members, are strongly recommended, as shown in K Appendix 2, drawing 10.

56.14.11. Where the roll-cage is mounted directly to the chassis, the front hoop may be mounted as shown in K Appendix 2, drawing 54.

56.14.12. Alternatively the front hoop may be mounted directly to a fabricated chassis extension, as shown in K Appendix 2, drawing 55. The chassis extension must be constructed as shown in K Appendix 2, drawing 56.

56.14.13. External front hoops must be fitted with a horizontal bar, approximately in line with the base of the windscreen, of the same material and dimensions as specified for the main members of the ROPS, and which may be bolted or welded to the front hoop Recommended for vehicles with an internal front hoop where installation is practical

56.14.14. Must be fitted with sill bars of the same material and specification as the main ROPS, or box section steel, being a minimum of 40mm x 40mm x3mm or 50mm x 25mm x 3mm. These may be welded or bolted to the main longitudinal chassis members.

56.15. Spaceframe vehicles: These are constructed entirely from a framework including an integral roll-cage made of tubes and/or box sections. For Safari Plus and all Hill Rallies, those elements comprising the primary chassis components must be of at least the same material and dimensions as the primary ROPS members, or equivalent box section steel

56.15.1. All these vehicles must comply with Safety Criteria K.1.6.1 and K Appendix 2, drawings 6(a) or 36 and have roll-cages incorporated into the frame of the vehicle.

56.15.2. The roll-cage must be welded and integral to the design vehicles in respect of fitting a diagonal.

56.15.3. Where there may be difficulty with rear-engined brace, braces to K Appendix 2, drawings 34 or 35 may be used.

56.15.4. A centre roof bar being of the same material and dimensions as the main ROPS members must be installed either diagonally or, evenly spaced in line with the exterior longitudinal bars, as shown in K Appendix 2, drawing 53. If more than one centre bar is fitted, the bars must be evenly spaced. Double crossed roof bars are strongly recommended, to the minimum specification for optional members, as shown in K Appendix 2, drawing 10.

56.15.5. It is recommended that a horizontal bar be incorporated in the front hoop, located approximately in line with the base of the windscreen, being of the same material and dimensions as the main ROPS members and which may be bolted or welded to the front hoop members. For Safari Plus and all Hill Rallies this horizontal bar is mandatory

56.15.6. A sill bar or single longitudinal door bar as shown in K Appendix 2, drawing 9., of the same material and dimensions must be fitted

All Vehicle Types

57.1. Materials and dimensions must comply with K.1.4.1 or be to EN10255 (BS1387) medium weight, blue band:    NOTE   to be removed 01/01/2020 i.e. 42.30 x 3.2mm for vehicles up to 1000kg and 48.00 x 3.2mm for ALL vehicles exceeding 1000kg Optional tubular members may be added to K1.4.1. or EN10255 (BS1387) medium weight. 30.00mm x 3.2mm

Materials may not be mixed.

57.1.1. All diameters are outside diameters.

57.1.2. All weights are deemed to be un-laden.

57.1.3. New vehicles which do not comply with the above must be approved in accordance with K.1.5.


(e). Other Considerations

(i). An effective roll over bar must be fitted of a height not less than 50mm at its top edge above the helmet of the normally seated driver. It must be wider than the driver’s shoulders at that height. It must be constructed of steel tubing of minimum 48.00mm diameter with a minimum wall thickness of 3.2mm. It should have a hole of 6mm drilled in the underside for checking the tube thickness. It should have the top bar straight or curved, but not tubes meeting in an inverted ‘V’. It must be effectively braced to a structural member.

(ii). Closed vehicles the main roll over bar hoop must be placed as near to the roof as possible.

(iii). Non-standard vehicles are advised to fit a safety roll over bar to the following minimum requirements: minimum height 710mm from the rear of the uncompressed seat cushion, of minimum flat width 380mm running into radius corners and affording driver and passenger equal protection. It must be mounted to a structural member with front mountings not less than the cockpit width and braced rearward.

(f). Diagonal Struts - these should be fitted such that the upper forward joint is on the driver’s side of the vehicle to add further support in the area of the driver’s head.

(g). Materials - (All dimensions represent minimum requirements.) Tube Specification: Cold drawn seamless carbon steel, minimum yield strength 350 N/ An alternative material is BS1387 medium weight blue band, dimensions being NOTE to be removed from 01/01/2020 42.30 mm x 3.2mm for vehicles up to 1000kg or 48.00mm x 3.2mm for ALL vehicles exceeding 1000kg. All diameters are outside diameters. In all groups recognized manufacturers may utilize a roll over bar of free conception as regards material and tube thickness providing it is able to withstand three simultaneously applied loads:1.5 w lateral5.5 w fore and aft 7.5 w vertical w = weight of vehicle plus 75 kg. Roll over bars of this type must be supported by a duly signed and completed Safety Roll Bar Certificate. The roll bar manufacturer must be registered with the MSA Ltd. Titanium is prohibited.

(h). Roof – all vehicles must be fitted with a solid roof panel. Specification for roof is a panel which is sufficiently strong enough to protect the occupants in the event of a rollover. The panel must cover all occupants adequately. An MSA scrutineer has the final decision as to what is sufficient. When fitted to the roll cage, the panel should not be riveted into the tubing, but to a welded on flange.

9.20 Fire Extinguishers . Hand-held extinguishers Blue Book Ref (K) 3.Mandatory  a hand-held fire extinguisher is required, the vehicle must be equipped with at least one fire extinguisher in compliance with 3.2.2 to 3.2.7 hereunder or with FIA Standard 8865‐2015 (Articles 3.2.2 to 3.2.5 hereunder do not apply in the latter case).  NOTE :~ A PLUMBED IN FIRE EXTINGUISHER IS NOT REQUIRED FOR CROSS COUNTRY EVENTS IF YOU DO FIT ONE YOU STILL REQUIRE A HANDHELD EXTINGUISHER OF THE RELEVENT CAPACITY 
. Permitted extinguishants:
AFFF, Clean Agent, powder or any other extinguishant homologated by the FIA. 
. Minimum quantity of extinguishant: • AFFF 2.4 litres • FireSense 2.4 litres • FX G‐TEC 2.0 kg • Viro3 2.0 kg • Zero 360 2.0 kg • Extreme 2.0 kg • Powder 2.0 kg . 
. All extinguishers must be pressurised according with the manufacturer's instructions. Powder extinguishers must be pressurised to 8 bars minimum, 13.5 bars maximum. Furthermore, each extinguisher must be equipped with a means of checking the pressure of the contents. 
. The following information must be visible on each extinguisher: • Capacity • Type of extinguishant • Weight or volume of the extinguishant • Date the extinguisher must be checked, which must be no more than two years after either the date of filling or the date of the last check, or corresponding expiry date.  
. All extinguishers must be adequately protected. Their mountings must be able to withstand a deceleration of 25g. Furthermore, only quick‐release metal fastenings (two minimum), with metal straps, are accepted. Anti‐torpedo tabs are required. It is prohibited to mount bottles outside the main structure.  
. The extinguishers must be easily accessible for the driver and the co‐driver.

9.21 Grab Rail - A passenger grab rail/handle or strap must be fitted in front of the passenger and must be constructed and installed in such a manner that it does not compromise the safety of the crew.

9.22 Seat belts - All seat safety belts must be complete units sourced from a recognised manufacturer and fitted in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, MSA

recommendations or FIA requirements (see FIA drawings 253-42, 253-43, 253-44 and 253-45). It is not permitted to mix parts of seat belts. They must be worn and correctly adjusted at all times during events.

Configurations must be as follows:

Four point Two shoulder straps and one lap strap, with four anchorage points on the chassis/body shell or roll over bar of the vehicle. One either side of the Driver and two to the rear of the Driver’s seat.

Six point Two shoulder straps, one lap strap and two straps between the legs, with six

anchorage points on the chassis/body shell or roll over bar of the vehicle. One either side of the Driver, two to the rear of the Driver’s seat and two between the legs.

Only one release mechanism is permitted on each seat belt configuration and this must be accessible to the wearer when seated in the competing position. The anchorage points to the rear should be positioned so that the strap from the shoulder is as near horizontal

as possible. It should not be located on the floor directly behind the Driver/Co-Driver


9.22(a).One seatbelt safety cutter/life hammer per crew member must be fitted in the vehicle within easy reach with seatbelts on.
