Which Batteries and rope for winch?

Post by Stig » Mon Jan 10, 2011 12:07 pm

I have searched through the internet to try and find out which batteries to use to run an electric winch on a 90. It would seem that the choices are; Odyessey, Optima or Exide. Which is the best to use, ( i know that they are all expensive, but its not always the most expensive that is best). I have tried duracell but they were c.....p!
Which rope do I go for Plasma or Dyneema?
One last question; does anyone know how much 11mm or 12mm rope you can get on a gigglepin wide drum?

Input would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Hi Wil

Been running an Optima red top in the trialler for a couple of years now and it has never been a problem with the constant starting and short driving times.

As for winch ropes, take a look at the ''Samson Ropes'' web site and have a look at a product called ''Tech12'' which is a 12 strand hollow fibre rope.

We use it for stunts all the time

Thanks Nick,
Only question, is there anyone in this country that supplies it in 11mm or 12mm? It would seem that they all supply smaller climbing ropes and yaght stuff but nothing with high strength>

Cheers

You can get 9mm in bright red that has a strength of 8200kg and get more rope on your drum.

I finally tracked down someone who supplies this rope, obviously the stunt/film industry doesnt have the budget constraints of us mere mortals. The rope you use is rather expensive, it makes plasma rope look cheap and nasty.

Soz Wil, hadn't thought about the cost.

Being a mere mortal as well, the cost of the rope is covered by a production company.

What do they do with it when they have used it for a bit? I'm sure that H+S says it can't show any signs of wear. Could it be recycled? I found the reason the film industry use that specific rope, heat going through pulleys. When we use it, it will be water or mud cooled, in a cold muddy enviroment. So when they have used the heat bit we can use the cooler bit!! If you understand my logic!!

Rope is Really down to budget, personal preference, winch and the competitions your using it in. I personally use a MARLOW 12mm or 11mm max. The reason for the large diameter is account for abrasion, as well as the ever increasing pulling power of winches! In most cases a smaller diameter rope will do the job but due to the abrasion of tree's, rocks and sand, Can quite quickly weaken a rope . The competition winches have a large drum on usually so there is no issue when it comes to fitting the rope on a winch. I can fit 12mm 38m on my winch easily.

If you need help finding a suitable rope or would like to have a chat or go in to more detail please private message me.
