Shocking

Postby weebroon » Sat Jul 31, 2010 12:03 am

Hi all

Today while picking my Disco up from a closed Keith Gott (keys on top of wheel) I was stung by a wasp. Within minutes I had developed an itchy rash all over my body, my face had swollen up and my lips had gone numb. At which point I passed out.

I will go to hospital tomorrow as it looks like I have developed a sever anaphylactic allergy to wasp stings and your body only gives you one chance like this and the next one could prove fatal if not treated within minutes.

If the blood tests prove positive (highly likely) I will have to carry an epipen (single shot adrenaline needle) for the rest of my life and given the nature of the trialing environment........wasps! I will carry one in a prominent position in the car.

Bummer
I would rather have a bad days trialing than a good day at work

 Hey Nick

Despite the fact me and you have been chatting on the dreaded facebook chat for the last 10 minutes im rather surprise at what ive just read... After the mayhem we had at great brickhill last year where you where chased by not only one wasp, but by 100,Im surprised you aint got a phobia, rather than a allergy I think you know the time im talking about.

If you have to keep it inside the car, surely with todays health and safety rule you will have to have 2 cable ties holding it in place, so by the time you or i have ripped it from your trialer, you'll be pretty stuffed,

ow and by the way if you need someone to give you the injection i'd happily do it getting you back for stealing the key to our new trialer at brickhill...

OK it's official I am on the anaphalaxy register.

Just got back from hospital and was told I am lucky to still be here. I am on strong antihistamines and steroids and also have to carry an epipen adrenaline injector around for the rest of my days. So if I start wandering about making no sense all of a sudden....yes, I know it will be difficult to tell..I have been stung by a wasp.

Protocol is to jab the epipen into the outer thigh and hold for 15 seconds and this administers the right amount of adrenaline to counter the shock............and dial 999

Appreciate it that if those that read this make a note as because by the time I realised what was going on last night I could not work out how to use my phone.

Nick
Sorry to hear your news and obviously glad to hear that you are now OK.
Though not as serious as you, I got bitten by a midge of some sort at Aldermaston earlier in the year and my right hand swelled to double its size, so I was on antihistamine and antibiotics for a week, and I now take antihistamine medication before I go trialling.

Those of us that have read your post will know what to do, but I suggest that you make sure it gets mentioned at the Drivers' Briefing.

PS. G-Wagen engine still won't start, and though chassis is sound, outriggers are shot and most suspension bushes are rusted solid. It's going to my garage to have the front axle swapped, and I will then decide what to do with the rest of it.

See you soon
Andrew
If it doesn't get muddy, why did you buy it?

Good idea Andrew.

Have just spoken to Skin as going to West Harptree this Sunday and he will bring it up in the drivers briefing. Still a bit surreal for me but have to accept the fact now that a small pointless insect can possibly kill me and if stung, and if I react, (90% chance) I will have about 5 > 10m minutes to react accordingly. About 10 > 20 people in the UK a year die from anaphylactic shock, normally as a result of not understanding what is going on or if they do, failure to administer adrenaline via the epipen. 999 must always be called as 24hrs observation in hospital is required.

John, Mr Cane, Phil Foster, Will Webster and any other COC's out there I would appreciate this mentioned at the drivers briefs please and not just for my sake as we encounter lots of biting insects on trials and my experience has opened my eyes a lot.

Vic, what is the MSA spec for mounting a hypodermic adrenaline needle to the car :?:

Well prehaps you could build an MSA spec oxygen tent ( or a zorb ball) as it would seem that you are rather prone to things coming in your trialler (west down)!

Duely noted ref your request - does the injection come with written instructions or just a pictures, cos I may need to get my glasses fixed!!

Cheers

Wil
If it breaks then YOU did not build it well enough!!
If it doesn't break then YOU were not trying hard enough!!
