Remote transfer box options

Postby Tig9619 » Wed Jul 21, 2010 10:00 pm

I want to put a BMW engine back in my racer but dont want to faff around with the conversion plate again to my LT77, which wouldnt last that long anyway! A BMW getrag box is a better, stronger and cheaper option but cant afford Milner prices for a remote transfer box.
What are my options on stock items? Someone told me suzuki sj transfer boxes are strong! 300bhp strong?
Is converting an LT230 a good and simple option?
Any thoughts from the experienced are welcomed.
Cheers guys.

I suspect a standard sj box would be pushing it a bit but I have been playing about with these boxes for an other application and it struck me that you could stack two sets of gears to double the strength. This would be a similar approach to the double width start gears run in Hewland boxes for hill climbing. It would involve a bit of machining and welding but would be a lot cheaper than a proper racing transfer box. I assume you would only want one range. Space would be limited to do high and low. If you wanted reverse rotation you could pick up drive from the lay shaft but this would need work on the case for bearing housing and seals etc. If you think of going down this route check with the Suzuki experts out there because the boxes vary 410 and 413 ratios are different and the layshaft bearing arrangment is different on some older boxes.
At the end of the day if you want peace of mind and reliabitity buy a proper box however if you want a bit of fun and a lot of satisfaction when/if! you make it work give it a try.

How about a toyota remote transfer box (hilux or landcruiser), we used one ages ago in a trialler and didnt have any problems, but I would not know how much power you could put to it, I would think it would be more than you could put through a suzuki one.
Just a thaught!
If it breaks then YOU did not build it well enough!!
If it doesn't break then YOU were not trying hard enough!!

sj boxes can put up with alot more power than designed for, there is a challenge truck running a suzuki v6 with about 180hp which is about 100 more than a normal suzuki engine but i think 300hp might be pushing it.

i think a toyota box would be able to put up with it but im not sure, the best bet would be to ask http://offroad-armoury.com/

they will tell you if a toyota or suzuki box would put up with it

Suzuki SJ transfer box will supposedly take the output from a SBC or 4.6 V6 on larger tyres, not having done it I am not sure I would want to put it to the test. The issue seems to be that the torque forces the shafts apart and splits the casing. A spine is available which wraps the transfer box, this can be incorporated into a cradle (another weak spot on the transfer box is the mountings, they pull out) I do not plan on putting more than 180hp through my transferbox and will build a spine and cradle to be on the safe side, with what we do I am not sure how much extra the box will take, remember it was designed for 63hp!

Yes I see how that spine would help with the strength. Like some have said I dont believe it would be up to the job with my engine, not with what we do anyway. Perhaps stick with the good old LT230, they might be on the heavy side but they are pretty tough. I'm sure I could use an old output shaft off a main box and convert it to take a prop flange. Any thoughts on that one? Simple bearing carrier perhaps as the input gear is already held between 2 taper roller bearings in the transfer case.
I'll stick with the v8 for now and do some experimenting with a scrap transfer box in the meantime.
I also thought about just running rear drive but in something as heavy as a Landy that maybe a stupid idea, but fun!

Another alternative would be to convert a Toyota transfer box to divorced. OTT do a simple kit

have you looked at a lada4x4 transfer box,(probably quite rare now) its really small but seemed quite strong with high/low,and diff lock options, i have heared they have been used with huge power outputs in the states
i used one with approx 220bhp and it was up to the job,
