Centre Diff-lock & traction control

Does anyone know the official background as to why Land Rover reinstated the centre diff-lock on the late 04-54 model Discovery II?

Think I remember reading at the time that it was customer demand, though that seems slightly unlikely.

In reality it may have been either the slight delay before traction control works fooling drivers into thinking they were stuck - or perhaps unreliable electronics meaning they really were!
